Onur and the Nazis for BR/ARD (DE) and LRT (LT)

A German lawyer with Turkish heritage representing Holocaust survivors against Nazis. That’s it. That’s the story.

As a lawyer, Onur Özata fights against Nazi violence. He represents Holocaust survivors and victims of neo-Nazi attacks such as Halle or Hanau. In doing so, he repeatedly exposes himself to hatred and incomprehension. The fact that he still takes on these cases is due to his life story.

My presenter debut for ARD Germany, Onur and the Nazis is an original piece of journalism and storytelling that represents a myraid of themes - war crimes, interfaith and representation in Germany, belonging and societial justice.

This feature was recorded in Germany, Poland and Lithuania.

Debuted on Bayern 2/ARD audiothek in German on the 25th June, 2022.

Lithuanian version for LRT debuted in Lithuanian on the 21st of August, 2023.

What People Are Saying at BR

“Fascinating from beginning to end. This feature was never boring. With every new scene and every new interlocutor, I wanted to know more about them, more details and more background. I was hooked.”

Klaus Uhrig, Podcast Editor

“As an Australian journalist and granddaughter of Holocaust-survivors, Amie Liebowitz brings a fresh, unique and interesting perspective to her subject. Her knowledge of the far right movement in today's Germany is very impressive. I loved listening to her feature.”

Katja Huber, Radio Drama Editor

“This feature has many scenes that I will remember: The 99 year old Holocaust survivor Fania Brancovskaja speaking Yiddish. Or lawyer Onur Özata talking about an old lady who was his childhood neighbour still repeating Nazi propaganda lies in 1980s Berlin. This feature paints a vivid picture of Germany grappling with its past.”

Johannes Berthoud, Feature Editor
